Early Karting and Single Seaters

At the age of 15, Timo Glock decided to persue a career in motorsport and took up karting in 1998. Success was instant, with Glock winning several Karting championships in just two years. Timo’s first step up to single seaters was in the Formula BMW Junior Cup in 2000, which he unsurprisingly won at his first attempt. From 19 races that season, he managed to win 11 of them and be on the podium for all but four races. It was domination of that series.

The step up to the German Formula BMW was inevitable and again Timo won the championship. Although it wasn’t in the same domination in which he had done in the year before, but Glock managed to secure the championship by 30 points, in a championship that also involved another future F1 driver in Christian Klien. For 2002, Glock was signed by Opel Team KMS for the Formula 3 Germany championship. It was again another successful run by the German, finishing a very respectable third in the series, once again proving his credentials. In the end, it was a comfortable win for Gary Paffett, but Glock still managed to pick up three wins along the way, twice at the Nurburgring and once in Austria at the A1-Ring.

The increasing success of Timo was catching eyes and he was promoted within his Opel Team KMS to the Formula 3 Euroseries for the following season. Current Formula 1 drivers Robert Kubica and Nico Rosberg took part in the series that season, as well as familiar names in Christian Klien and Markus Wincklehock, who Timo had raced against before in previous years. Once again, Glock picked up three wins, at Hockenheim, Magny-Cours and Adria (a circuit in northern Italy). This time however he would finish fifth in the championship, which was won by Ryan Briscoe.

This was not the only event that Glock took part in in 2003 however, with him entering the Masters of Formula 3. The race is an annual event held at the Zandvoort circuit in the Netherlands. Past winners include David Coulthard (1991), Jos Verstappen (1993) and Lewis Hamilton (2005). However, with little information about the 2003 race to be found, it is believed that Timo finished in 30th position. Whether or not he finished the race with him being low down is not known. However, the race was won by Christian Klien.

First Spell in F1

Success in the lower formulae saw Eddie Jordan and his Jordan Grand Prix team hire him as their official test and reserve driver for the 2004 Formula 1 season. But, when financial circumstances ruled Jordan driver Giorgio Pantano out of the Canadian Grand Prix, Glock was called up to cover him for a one off race.

(Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Bongarts/Getty Images)Qualifying on his debut was unspectacular at best, starting 16th on the grid, and although one place behind team mate Nick Heidfeld, he was one second behind the other German. The race for Timo was also uneventful, although managed to find himself in tenth place after a opening lap melee, he eventualy dropped back down the order. And Glock luckly avioided a spinning Christian Klien towards the end of the race to cross the finish line in a very respectable 11th position. But that was not the end of it. After the race had finished, the FIA disqualified both Williams and Toyota cars due to illegal brake ducts, promoting Timo Glock to 7th, therefore he managed to score two points on his debut in Formula 1. Team mate Nick Heidfeld also benefitted by coming in 8th.

Timo also took part in a Porsche Supercup race with the Porsche AG VIP Team, but it is unknown where he raced but as a guest driver, he was unable to score any points.

With three races to go in the 2004 Formula 1 Championship, where Michael Schumacher had sewn up another Championship win, Giorgio Pantano was sacked by the Jordan Grand Prix team for poor performances. Once again, Timo was called up to replace him in the final three races in China, Japan and Brazil. However, Timo could not match his amazing debut performance, finishing 15th in each race, with his highest qualifying finish of just 16th. Jordan opted not to renew Glock’s contract for 2005, with Jordan opting for Narain Karthikeyan and Tiago Monteiro instead.

America Calling

With no Grand Prix drive for 2005, Timo Glock instead moved to the USA to race in Champ Car World Series with the Rocketsports team alongisde Ryan Hunter-Reay and Michael McDowell, who were sharing the #31 car. Glock’s first race was the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in California. Glock qualified in 6th position, the highest place rookie on the gird. For a first time qualifying session, it was impressive as Timo was just 0.8 seconds behind pole position driver and long time Champ Car driver Paul Tracy, and just 0.4 behind the 2004 winner Sebastien Bourdais. The race for Glock was unspectacular, as he finished the race where he started in 6th place.

Lexmark Indy 300 - Day 4

The following weekend in Monterry was a disapointment as Glock made contact with Nelson Phillipe on lap 69 after a eventful race for the German, mainly for the wrong reasons as he made a few mistakes. However, he still managed to set the fastest lap of that race, his one and only in the Champ Car World Series. More points came at Milwaukee, Portland, Cleveland and Toronto, before contact at Edmonton ruined a solid finishing streak. San Jose and Denver proved unspectacular again for Glock, where in Denver he was forced to retire due to mechanical problems.

However, Timo Glock’s biggest moment in the Champ Car World Series came in the 2005 Molson Indy Montreal. At the same circuit where he had made his Formula 1 debut a year earlier, it looked like another points scoring race as Glock qualified in 11th place. But the race was spectacular for Timo. Glock lead the race for 19 laps after overtaking Sebastien Bourdais. But the real action came in the closing laps as Oriol Servia closed in on Glock. With a few laps remaining, the action closed up and Glock decided to keep the lead by cutting the final chicane on the Montreal circuit. However, as rules required that he had to let Servia back past him, he relinquished the lead with half a lap remaining. Unfortunatly, he failed to regain the lead and finished in second place.

It would turn out to be his highest finish in Champ Car. Glock sailed through the final three races with ease, 8th in Las Vegas, 10th at Surfer’s Paradise and a 5th in his final Champ Car World Series race at Mexico City. The results rounded off a fairly successful season for Glock, as he finished the season in 8th place and picked up the Rookie of the Year award ahead of Andrew Ranger.

Return to Europe

Timo Glock decided not to stay in America so returned to Europe and the still new GP2 series for 2006, a feeder series to Formula 1. Glock initially signed for the BCN Competicion outfit, but early races suggested that he had more potential than with a back of the grid team. A double points finish at San Marino was his only points scored with BCN. After just five weekends with BCN, he left for the more competitive iSport International in time for the British round at Silverstone. It was here that he scored his first podium, during the feature race, most famous for the Lewis Hamilton come back from the back of the grid. The second place in the feature was followed up with 6th in the sprint race. But Glock managed to take his first win in GP2 in the following weekend at Magny Cours, which was soon followed by another win in the sprint race at his home race of Hockenheim. He was constantly in the top 5 until the last race of the season where an accident in the feature race at Monza saw him sit out the final race of the season. Glock still managed to finish fourth, with team mate Ernesto Viso coming in just behind him.

Spanish Formula One Grand Prix: GP2 Race

Timo stayed in GP2 and with iSport International for 2007 along with new team mate Andreas Zuber, an Austrian driving with an UAE license. The seasons started off with great success for Glock, securing three second place finishes in the first three races at Bahrain and Barcelona. This run was finely topped off with a neat win in Round 4, ahead of Javier Villa and championship contender Lucas di Grassi.

The run of podiums was abruptly halted by four disasterous races. Whilst on pole for the feature race in France, Glock drove his car into his team mate Zuber in a very unusual accident. However that was shortly topped by a horrific accident involving former team mate Ernesto Viso. The following three races, were also retirements. Meaning that after Great Britain (Round 9), the championship was close between him and Lucas di Grassi. Lucas di Grassi was consistant throughout the season, and despite only picking up one win in Istanbul, he was more or less always in the points and high up in those points positions. But Glock was also picking up the wins, specifically at Istanbul and Monza.

The championship ran down to the final race at Valencia, Glock was leading di Grassi by just two points. But the Championship was all but decided after the feature race, on a damp track, Lucas di Grassi spun and retired from the race, with Timo Glock finishing in seventh place. For the sprint race, it would require an exceptional drive from di Grassi to catch up to Glock who was starting on the front row. It was Timo who won the race and the GP2 Championship, di Grassi could only come home in 13th. Alongside his GP2 commitments, Timo Glock was the reserve and test driver for the BMW Sauber team. He was speculated to replace Robert Kubica for the USGP after the spectacular crash involving the Pole a week before which ruled him out for the race. However, that role went to fellow German Sebastian Vettel. When Vettel left the team to replace Scott Speed at Toro Rosso ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Glock was promoted to the team’s first test and reserve driver for the remainder of the season.

F1 Comeback

After winning the GP2 Championship, he was hotly tipped to return to Formula 1, and for the 2008 F1 season, he signed a contract with Toyota, with him replacing the outgoing Ralf Schumacher. As usual, the season began in Australia and the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. The race featured a lot of retirements, with only seven cars managing to see the chequered flag. Unfortunatly, Timo was not one of them. On lap 44, he ran wide onto the uneven grass, the car was launched into the air before crashing back down in a massive accident. Although it brought out the safety car, Glock managed to get out of the car and was OK. It was another retirement in Malaysia after just one lap, as a spin by Sebastien Bourdais caused a chain reaction between Rosberg and Glock.

Despite finishing his first race in Bahrain, it wasn’t until the Canadian Grand Prix that Glock scored his first points of the season. It was once again another action packed race, with incidents including the infamous Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen pitstop drama. But Timo took full advantage of the situation to come home fourth, his highest ever finish in Formula 1 at the time. It was also the first time that Glock lead a race in Formula 1. Glock laundered around the midfield for the following two races, before a horrendous impact coming out of the final corner at his home race at Hockenheim. The right rear suspension on the car failed, causing Glock to slam into the pitwall at high speed. Although dazed after the impact, he was fit again for the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was Timo’s time to shine. After an impressive qualifying, getting the Toyota to 4th on the grid. He drove a solid race to finish in 2nd, taking advantage of Felipe Massa’s engine failure, to not only record his best ever finish (and still to date, shared with Singapore 2009).

Glock continued to be in and around the points for the rest of the season, Europe (7th), Belgium (9th), Singapore (4th) and China (7th). This despite a few off days at Monza and Fuji. But, sadly, the one moment he will be most remembered for in 2008 will be the last corner on the last lap in the last race in Interlagos, Brazil. You will know the situation by now, Glock was in 5th position and Lewis Hamilton in 6th, Hamilton needed to be in 5th to win the World Championship. Glock, who was on dry tyres in the wet track struggled to find traction get up the hill on the last corner, Hamilton took advantage and finished 5th and won the World Championship for 2008. Some ridiculous people believed it was a conspiracy theory so that Hamilton would win it. Although clearly that was a simply ludacris claim.

Toyota retained Glock for 2009, but it was a bad start in Australia as both Toyota’s were sent to the back of the grid after it was revealed the cars were running illegal rear wings. Despite this, both drivers managed to get up to the top of the grid, with Trulli in 3rd and Glock just behind in 4th.

This after Lewis Hamilton was disqualified after lying to stewards. The inquires of Australia was followed by a very, very wet Malaysia. And by wet, red flag wet. Timo Glock managed to find himself in 2nd behind Jenson Button after the red flag was shown. But rules meant it went to the order on the lap before, meaning that although Glock still had a podium finish, it was Heidfeld who ended up 2nd. Two 7th place finished followed in another wet China and in Bahrain. But come the European season, Toyota began to struggle. Timo Glock only scored one point in five races. Even after three points in Hungary, more struggling followed in Valencia, Spa and Monza.

(Photo by Clive Mason/Getty Images) But the poor run was abruptly ended with a fine 2nd place finish at the Singapore Grand Prix. Taking advantage of mistakes by drivers above him, he solidly drove to his second place finish. But it was quickly forgotton a week later in Japan. During an action packed qualification session, specifically Q2, Glock was on a quick lap, but he went off line in the last corner and crashed the car into the tyre barrier at 165mph. He had a horiffic cut to the leg and delayed qualifying by eight minutes. This also forced him out of the end of the season with a gashed leg and a back injury, missing out on the Japanese, Brazilian and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Glock was replaced by Kamui Kobayashi for the final two races.

New Boys on the Block

timomalaysia With Toyota confirming that they had pulled out of Formula 1 at the end of the 2009 season, there was rumours on where Timo Glock. The favourites were Renault, but financial uncertanties around the team saw no contract signed. Instead, Glock moved to one of the new teams entering F1 for the 2010 season, Virgin Racing. Owned by Sir Richard Branson, with the car designed by Nick Wirth using only CFD to design the car. He will be partnered by rookie Lucas di Grassi, with Glock the team leader in the new Virgin outfit.

The team were not expected to be challengers for anything and could only be judged against the other new teams of Lotus Racing and Hispania. However the car struggled in the first four races, failing to finish in the first three and failing to even start in China. His first finish would be a lowly 18th in Spain, albeit the best finisher of the six new cars.

Glock has been more consistent in later races, being the only driver to have looked to be close to the Lotus Racing cars. Qualifying wise, he has made it into the second session once, mainly down to the heavy rain catching many cars out in Malaysia.

The future for Timo is currently uncertain, Virgin Racing wish to keep him but he is also a candidate for the second Renault drive alongside Robert Kubica.

I am glad you have put up such a complete article on F1′s most likeable driver. I had also forgotten that Nick and Timo were in a Jordan for one race. I am really upset that Timo has had to sit out Brazil with a cracked vertebra. I am not convince the politics or the injury could not rule out a return at Abu Dhabi. The official press is not ruling it out!. It could also not happen at a worse time what wit Toyota and the Silly Season. I fear he may end up at one of the new teams which could seriously sideline his career.

  2. Jackie says:

That’s some really interesting stuff you have written there RG. It shows just how much effort you have to put in to get into the top flight of Formula One.

I’d like to see Timo get into a good team next year with a conisitent car and we’ll get to see what he’s really capable of. Hope he’s back on the mend soon.

  3. RG says:

Thank you so much for the kind words. After a lot of effort in making this, really is nice to see people not only reading but commenting on it. Thanks.
